The Pappus
The Pappus represents adaptability in motion — the quiet strength to evolve, lead, and grow through change. In leadership, as in life, conditions are rarely perfect. Success depends not on control, but on the capacity to adjust, to rise through uncertainty, and to find direction in movement.

Like the pappus carried by the wind, effective leaders balance stability with agility. They know when to hold fast and when to release — trusting that growth often begins beyond the comfort of what is known. The pappus reminds us that progress is not about resisting change, but about navigating it with purpose, resilience, and self-awareness.

When establishing hauxWELL Executive Health, I often came back time and time again to the themes of resilience and adaptability. That is, after all, often what great leadership is about at its core right? The need to remain steadfast through times of change, and to set the direction with a sense of surety and confidence. Yet, as leaders we are also something that is often forgotten… we are just people too, flaws and all. We don’t always have all of the answers, we can’t foresee all possible threats, risks and outcomes, and we don’t always get it right.

That said, we do have the ability and permission to show up as our best selves - and that means continuously learning, growing and adapting in a way that provides others with a sense of groundedness in where we are leading them.

The Pappus serves as a powerful symbol for modern leadership — resilient, adaptable, and in constant evolution. It reflects our capacity to stay composed amid challenge, to respond to shifting conditions with clarity, and to continue moving toward purpose. In the same way a pappus travels on the breeze, great leaders also allow ideas, perspectives, and people to move and grow freely. They understand that letting go is not losing control; it is creating space for innovation and renewal.
